Project Gotham Racing

Bizarre Creations, the developer of Metropolis Street Racer for Dreamcast, makes its Xbox debut with a sequel of sorts. Project Gotham Racing is very similar to its predecessor, except with refined gameplay mechanics and vastly improved graphics. The focus of this racer is unique, as it's centered on the "kudos" system. Players are rewarded bonus points for sustaining slides, riding on two wheels, catching air, clean driving, and passing other drivers. Chaining any of these actions together results in high-scoring combinations. So in addition to trying to finish the race first, the player must worry about style and technique to succeed in this game. The kudos system is fun and definitely makes this game stand out from the competition.

Amped

Amped: Freestyle Snowboarding ditches the conventional racing modes of other snowboarding games and instead focuses on freestyle action--in other words, executing tricks with style. The excellent trick system and accurate physics make for tight gameplay across the board. The game sports a robust career mode as well as quick start and multiplayer modes.

The Simpsons: Road Rage

The first thing that leaps out at you when you pick up The Simpsons: Road Rage is its similarity to Crazy Taxi--it's a shameless copy of the Sega hit. The premise is simple: drive around Springfield picking up characters from the TV show, then deposit them at their requested destinations in exchange for cash. The graphics are colorful yet not overly detailed, keeping with the cartoon style of the show. The processor resources thus saved are applied to keeping the action at a frenetic pace. The levels are pretty big, with a multitude of flash jumps and shortcuts. Most of the scenery is destructible, too, adding to the satisfying mayhem. All the locales are recognizable, from Moe's Bar to Grandpa Simpson's retirement home.

Dead or Alive 3

Any new gaming console needs to offer a quality fighting game at launch, and for the Xbox that title is Tecmo's Dead or Alive 3. Though DOA3 doesn't revolutionize the fighting genre, it does offer a great gaming experience, and its graphics easily surpass every other fighting game on the market--on any system.

Arctic Thunder

Are you ready for the ultimate vehicular battle... on snow? Arctic Thunder lets you throttle the competition using hand-to-hand combat and an impressive cold-weather arsenal that includes snow bombs, atomic snowballs, proximity missiles, and more. Choose from one of 19 different characters and sleds, each with its own unique capabilities. Wage battle on 12 tracks set in exotic locales such as the Swiss Alps and the fictional world of Atlantis. Master any of the 62 different tricks, or lure your friends into a battle arena for a chilly duel. Five arenas are available for you to fight head-to-head with two to four friends. Play in six different modes: Race, Points, Battle Arena, Upgrade Shop, Training, and Arcade.

Cel Damage

Cel Damage pits a cast of crazy toons against each other in maxed-out, weapon-laden vehicles: you must outmaneuver, outrace, and outsmack all others for personal glory. From a Tommy-gun-totin' gangster duck to a diminutive demon with a woodchipper, these gas-powered gladiators battle it out across 12 highly interactive environments. Authentically cartoony weapons include giant boxing gloves, baseball bats, axes, and chainsaws. A stylish cel-shaded look and a "stretch and squish" physics engine make it seem as though all the wild action is taking place in an actual cartoon episode. There are six playable characters and four guest stars you can unlock. You can even smash your friends in four-player split-screen action.

Spider-Man: The Movie

Spider-Man: The Movie allows fans to play as Spider-Man in several highly detailed 3-D environments inspired by the Columbia Pictures/Marvel Entertainment live-action feature film (due for release in May of 2002). This full-roaming action-adventure game allows players to jump into the suit of a fledgling Marvel superhero and learn how to battle the forces of evil. Players crawl, leap, and swing from the dizzying heights of skyscrapers to catch criminals and supervillains, and, ultimately, come face-to-face with the Green Goblin in a death-defying display of aerial combat. During the course of the game, players must use Spider-Man's spider sense, agility, quick wits, and strength to evade the pursuit of the bad guys and overcome obstacles.

Silent Hill 2: Restless Dreams

With its Poe-like atmosphere, dense fog, pitch-black hallways, and a cryptic letter from a dead wife, Silent Hill 2: Restless Dreams promises to surpass the paranoia created by its predecessor, Silent Hill. The sequel opens with James Sunderland, the series' average joe protagonist, reading a mysterious message that says, "Silent Hill, our sanctuary of memories. I'll be waiting for you there." More puzzling is that the note is signed by Mary, his deceased wife.
